Bates and Ferri (2010) define entertain as ‘activity understood objectively that encompasses communication between text and audience from an external stimulus, offers pleasure, requires audience participation and occurs in a passive form.’ Most forms of entertainment have survived for centuries and continue to adapt to different media, as is illustrated by the longevity of such traditions as stage magic and film. Other activities, such as sports, have become spectator sports and global competitions.
