Daily News is an American tabloid newspaper founded in 1919. It was the first successful daily tabloid in the United States. The newspaper attracted readers with sensational coverage of crime and scandal, lurid photographs, and celebrity gossip. It also included classified ads, comics, and sports news. The newspaper was a pioneer in the use of electronic publishing systems.
In the 1990s, the paper shifted to more social justice and political commentary, and earned Pulitzer Prizes for its coverage of such events as police brutality against Abner Louima. During this time, the New York Daily News was considered one of America’s leading newspapers.
The newspaper remained in business throughout the 2000s, but its circulation continued to decline. In 2016, the Daily News was a tabloid that had circulation less than half of its heyday of the 1940s. The emergence of Donald Trump’s campaign for the presidency provided an opportunity to re-establish the News among New York City’s most prominent media outlets. Its headlines harked back to its roots, with the News giving Trump the middle finger through the Statue of Liberty’s hand and re-hashing its 1975 screamer: “TRUMP TO WORLD: DROP DEAD!”
But the News’ resurgence was short-lived. As readership continued to decline, the Tribune Company, which had acquired the newspaper in 1987, began laying off staffers in 1989. In October 1990, the ten unions that comprised the News’ Allied Printing Trades Council went on strike. The resulting 147-day strike was devastating to the Daily News and to all the other newspapers that depended on the Allied Press to produce their products.
After the strike ended, The Daily News was bought by controversial British media mogul Robert Maxwell, who also owned the Mirror Group of London. In 1991, he purchased the newspaper from the Tribune Company for $1. Maxwell, who was a major investor in the music industry, brought in a new editor-in-chief to reshape the paper, and he successfully negotiated with the newspaper’s ten unions.
