The Yale Daily News Digital Archive

Daily News is the official newspaper of the city and county of New York, and was founded in 1919. The paper’s original name was the “New York Daily News and Sun” before becoming the “New York Daily News”. The Daily News has had a reputation for sensationalism, primarily in its rivalry with the tabloid rival, the New York Post. During its peak, it was one of the nation’s largest newspapers with a circulation of over 2.4 million copies per day at the turn of the 20th century.

The Yale Daily News (YDN) is the oldest college daily newspaper in the United States, publishing Monday through Friday during the academic year. It is editorially and financially independent from the university, serving the needs of the student body. The YDN has long been recognized as a leader in journalism education and training, and its alumni have gone on to careers in the profession and in public service.

Each YDN article contains comprehension and critical thinking questions that help students analyze the main ideas presented in the story. YDN also includes “Background” and “Resources” sections that provide additional information to help students better understand the news story. YDN also offers a “Questions” newsletter that features questions to encourage readers to discuss the article with peers.

This collection includes digitized versions of articles from the Yale Daily News Historical Archive, which contains over 140 years of YDN reporting. The Archive is available online and is open to the general public. The Archive was created through a generous gift from an anonymous Yale College alumnus and is hosted by the Yale Library.
