The Yale Daily News (YDN) is the oldest college daily newspaper in the country. Founded on January 28, 1878, it is financially and editorially independent of Yale. Originally, the News was a staunchly Republican paper that supported isolationism in the early stages of World War II. In recent decades, it has shifted to a moderate-to-liberal stance. It is often contrasted with the right-wing New York Post.
As of 2017, the Daily News is owned by tronc, which acquired it in 2017. It is headquartered at 4 New York Plaza in Lower Manhattan, and has local offices in Brooklyn and Queens. It is the ninth most widely circulated daily newspaper in the United States.
Unlike most daily newspapers, the Daily News features large photographs and a wide range of topics including sports, gossip and entertainment. In the 1930s and 1940s, the Daily News was based at 220 East 42nd Street near Second Avenue, an official city and national landmark designed by architects John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood. It is now known as Manhattan West and houses the world headquarters of a number of major media companies, including The Associated Press. The News formerly maintained local bureaus in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens and owned the television station WPIX, now known as WCBS-TV. It was also a founding sponsor of the New York City Marathon.
