Law is a field of constant change. What works one year may not work the next and what was once a niche can become mainstream. That’s why it is important for all lawyers to keep their eyes open for new ideas at every turn. One idea that has taken hold is the concept of “law new.” This is a broad term that can mean different things for different firms but it typically refers to innovative ways for legal professionals to provide services. These strategies can include working with underserved communities, creating legal departments that focus on a specific area of the law and establishing non-traditional business models.
This bill would require City agencies to notify affected persons of security breaches involving their private information, and amend the definitions of “personally identifiable information” and “breach” under State law to align them with the City’s SHIELD Act. This legislation, which is named after Carlos Moncayo, a 22-year-old construction worker who died tragically at a City job site in 2015, also creates new criminal liability for corporations that negligently, recklessly, or intentionally cause the death or serious injury of their employees at work.
