A daily news is a publication that contains information about current events and issues of interest to the general public. It is usually published each day of the week, and covers a wide range of topics, such as politics, sports, business, and entertainment. A typical daily newspaper also contains articles about local events, and may include opinions from readers.
Founded on January 28, 1878, the Yale Daily News (YDN) is the oldest college daily newspaper in the United States. The YDN Historical Archive provides access to digitized versions of printed issues of the YDN from over 140 years, and is freely available worldwide. The Historical Archive is maintained by the Yale Library and the Library of Congress. The Yale Daily News is financially and editorially independent of the University.
In addition to its morning daily tabloid, the YDN also publishes a weekly news magazine and several special issues each year, including the Yale-Harvard Game Day Issue, the Commencement Issue, and the First Year Issue. The YDN is committed to providing coverage that represents the diverse perspectives of the Yale community, and works in close collaboration with student cultural centers and affiliated groups to do so.
Throughout this collection, the YDN has sought to hold itself up as a model for the rest of America. While that has not always been possible, the newspaper has remained an important source of news and opinion in New York City and beyond, with a reputation for breaking major stories and instigating discussion and debate. The YDN has also been a pioneer in tabloid journalism, and was the first American newspaper to publish a daily tabloid. Today, the newspaper is owned by Tronc, and is headquartered at 4 New York Plaza in Lower Manhattan. In recent years, the YDN has exhibited a moderate-to-liberal bias, and frequently contrasts with its right-wing rival, the New York Post. Its newsroom is located in the former Daily News Building, a New York City landmark designed by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood. The News also owns WPIX, a television station in the city’s metropolitan area that maintains its call letters from the original newspaper’s nickname, as well as radio affiliate WFAN-FM. The YDN is the ninth-largest newspaper in the United States by circulation. The YDN is known for its sensational reporting of crime, scandal, and violence, as well as its lurid photographs and cartoons. The paper has often been referred to as “New York’s Picture Newspaper.”
